Bird Calls Recording

Hi All

I am a complete newbie when it comes to recording bird calls. However it
is necessary to do this with my subject that I am studying,Red
Crossbills. It is part of a bigger picture but is a crucial and integral
part thereof.

I have in my "wisdom" purchased an Olympus LS-14 4GB.linear PCM recorder
after much searching on the net.It is a compromise between cost and
ability to do what I need.I shall or shall have analyzed the data on
Audacity as also cannot afford any of the high endstuf!!

Having read so many reports on everyhting to do with recording bird
calls I am getting suffocated with all the information from the various
sources.I need some direction from an expert on these matters and this
group has been recommended to me by one of my USA "advisers".

So here I am!! I am getting reports that my recorder might need an
external microphone to get better recording of the calls of this
bird.,something such a directional or cardoid??

Has anyone in the group got any ideas as to whether I shall need an
ext.mic.for this (or will it be sensitive enough to get away with it
stand alone) and if so which one.I cannot go as far as a Sennheiser, way
out of my budget but I have been told that Audio Tecnica on the low end
range my be OK or going a bit higher to try Rode NG1/2 or Rode
NG$/NG4+.Also will I need any special connector for the 2 devices??

Any ideas would be very useful in my quest,as my purchase arrives this
Wednesday from Amazon!! This particular has actually been discontinued
so was lucky to find it on Amazon.

Saludos
