Resending this as it didn't seem to post last time, maybe because it has a=

Unfortunately, Sennheiser gave you incorrect information that the MKE 400 w=
ill directly work with a smart phone. Almost all 3.5mm microphones use TRS =
(3 connections) connector, and almost all smart phones use TRRS (4 connecti=
ons) connectors. You will need an adapter similar to the one Wildtronics ca=
rries in their webstore. There are other sources for such adapters. There i=
s a new Audio Technica microphone that will connect directly to a smart pho=
ne, AT9913iS. Don't expect a lot from these mics. They are both high markup=
mics, with not so great performance. There are some cheap Chinese shotgun =
mics on Ebay that are similar to ones labeled with Audio Technica Pro Serie=
s.=0D

Smart phones can work as audio recorders. Field Recorder is a good app, and=
iRig Recorder has a pretty good free app. Not all microphones will work we=
ll with smart phones due to the power supply voltage they use to power exte=
rnal microphones. Smart phones will also not give the control over your aud=
io like a dedicated audio recorder and will be noisier. The Sony PCM-M10 is=
a very good choice for 3.5mm microphones. The PCM-M10 is in limited supply=
as they are being discontinued, and the replacement is almost twice the pr=
ice. Other recording options can be found on Ebay, such as Olympus LS10, LS=
12, LS14.=0D

I think you will disappointed when you realize how difficult it is to get g=
ood recordings of birds unless they are less than 30 feet away. Shotgun mic=
rophones can be helpful to isolate a subject, but offer no gain. Parabolic =
microphones can not only isolate the subject but also supply lots of gain. =
Wildtronics produces some of the lowest cost parabolic mics available. Our =
least expensive Pro Mini Parabolic with a Micro Mic PIP is just slightly ov=
er your budget, but would offer much improved performance over any lower co=
st, short shotgun microphone. =0D
