No, I'm pretty sure you're thinking about it correctly. Just from some earl=
ier experiments I did, I noticed exactly what you're saying: the effect is =
reduced. But I did that experiment using closely spaced omnis with no baffl=
e of any sort between them. So the stereo image I was getting was based ent=
irely on phase delay, not on difference in level. That's what prompted me t=
o start experimenting with partially baffled arrays like the SASS and the O=
lson Wing. While using my SASS to record coqui frogs on the ground, I picke=
d up trucks on a highway about two and a half miles away. The trucks ruined=
the recording of the frogs, but I could hear them panning across as they d=
rove down the highway. (The trucks... not the frogs.) I'm planning to fly t=
his a lot closer to the ground than that. I doubt I'll get it more than 300=
' in the air. Thinking in ground terms, that's a football field.

The reason I'm starting with kites and not balloons is that helium is rela=
tively expensive out here. Enough to fill a weather balloon that'll lift a =
1-2lb payload runs into the several hundreds of dollars per launch. That bu=
ys a lot of fabric and fake fur! In the grand scheme of things it's cheaper=
for me to use lifting equipment I already own and try to solve the wind is=
sue than it is for me to invest in a new system that has a high per-launch =
cost.

I'm glad you mentioned the ground acting as a reflector. That's the primar=
y reason why I think it would be interesting to record from low altitude. I=
'm looking at it as the difference between recording a musical performance =
in a sound booth and recording a musical performance in a concert hall. In =
the first case the subject being recorded is the musical group. In the seco=
nd the concert hall and its inherent acoustics are part of the performance.=
I WANT the reflections off the ground. That's part of the soundscape I'm t=
rying to record.

I finished building my prototype Olson Wing last night. Using David Brinic=
ombe's advice, I was able to record in 8-12kt wind. (Windjammer, reduced le=
vels, 40Hz cut seemed to wok reasonably well.) I have some work to do on th=
e kite suspension, but I should be able to fly it later today, or at least =
in the early part of this week.
