Lets take a break from all the tech stuff and get stuck into a Polish peat
bog! Heres a new soundcloud posting, with some notes on how the recording was
made, Id like to share with the group.

This may be the most beautiful, mysterious and beguiling of all choruses to be
heard in Europe - Great Snipe lekking. Highly subjective I know, but sometimes
youve got to stick your neck out to be heard:-)

Geoff,

Very nice. Suggests to me the snapping or crackling of Manakins on the lek in
Costa Rica.

Fascinating, and nearby, too (I'm over the river in Dutchess County). One
thing I would find interesting is being able to hear the above-water
sounds, too, particularly when trying to identify specific frog calls.
Knowing how each species sounds, both above and below the water line would
be very enlightening (not that I intend to become a fish, but just for the
sake of knowing).

Can one visit your station and see this setup in person?

Ray

3a. The recording with the Great Snipe

A wonderful recording. The birdname Snipe wonders me as we have a
completely different sound for this bird here in Iceland, reference: the
attached links, recording from 2011:

I am a little bit clumsy when reading the screen for soundcloud. What
kind of mics were used?

Best regards and congratulations:

Arnthor Helgason
