Shotgun mic Vs on-board mics

Subject: Shotgun mic Vs on-board mics

I have had a Sony PCM M10 for several years and I recently purchased a Rode=
NTG2 shotgun mic. It works and both channels show equal recording levels, =
but I am disappointed to find that the actual decibal levels shown are quit=
e a bit lower than when I just use the on-board microphones. I had assumed =
that the properly targeted sounds would be louder, not lower in volume. Is =
this normal? is there anything I can do about it?=0D
My interest is recording bird songs and calls, so getting as much volume a=
s possible is important.=0D
 Thanks, =0D
