How do we pronounce this new version of the word? Which syllable is emphasi=
sed?=0D
=0D
I've been saying an-THRO-phony. Now we say anthro-PO-phony? Like "anthro-PO=
-logy"?=0D

Yeah, I know, Kevin. Thank you for the kind thoughts and support. But the t=
rue linguists=E2=80=A6those who really know and understand language=E2=80=
=A6just won=E2=80=99t let me off the proverbial hook on this one. And I hav=
e to admit=E2=80=A6sadly=E2=80=A6that they=E2=80=99re right. I guess I=E2=
=80=99ll have to learn to add a syllable to the term, after all. I do like =
it better than anthropogenic noise, though, which I find really arcane and =
not too cool.=0D

Anthropophony is a little hard to say and might not be readily understood b=

I prefer the term =E2=80=9Cracket=E2=80=9D to describe the noise. :)=0D

Sorry, I misspelled anthropophony, again. Corrected in the text, now.=0D

For the past four weeks, with five more to go, I=E2=80=99ve been (and will =
be) lecturing across Europe and the UK on the subject of Soundscape Ecology=
and have picked up a few pointers, so far, along the way.=0D

First and foremost, the term, anthrophony, that Stuart Gage (Emeritus, Mich=
igan State Univ.) and I first published after our National Park Service stu=
dy program (2001-2) was published, is not correct. We thought that the pref=
ix, anthro, meant human. But, alas, it doesn=E2=80=99t. The root literally =
means cave, in Greek. And we ain=E2=80=99t speaking about the sound of cave=
s. The problem was called to my attention by several French colleagues in b=
oth Quimper and Paris, where I was speaking, that if we wanted to express h=
uman sound, then the word needs to be anthropophony. The addition of the =
=E2=80=9Cpo=E2=80=9D in the middle, is essential. (Note: the term was corre=
ctly translated in the French edition of The Great Animal Orchestra).=0D
=0D
Second, a new piece of gear was called to my attention that some may have a=
lready checked out. But for those who haven=E2=80=99t, give the new RME: Ba=
byface a shot:=0D

You may want to ask this question in the Yahoo micbuilders group. But mean=
while I have a couple of comments and questions.=0D
=0D
The question is: How many microphone/transmitter systems do you need to mak=
e? and how much are you prepared to pay for them?=0D
=0D
About 35 years ago I fabricated some microphones in support of a friend's f=
ield research in the Amazon jungle. For that I sealed the front of the mic=
rophone with 1/10 mil polycarbonate film, and the back of the microphone wi=
th electronic type silicone rubber. I wouldn't say that those capsules wer=
e waterproof, but they did survive six months in the jungle. If I had to d=
o it today, I'd check out the waterproof capsules made by Knowles; their WP=
 series:=0D
http://www.knowles.com/eng/Products/Microphones/Waterproof/WP-series=0D
=0D
Those capsules are typically guaranteed down to an immersion depth of 3 met=
ers. These capsules are typically in the range of $25 at Digikey and elsew=
here.=0D

I'm a bit more concerned with the concept of using a radio link. Why can't=
 you use cable?=0D

I'm a Ph.D. student and I need to make some long term environmental noise m=
easurements. I need to deploy a noise measurement network using small nodes=
equipped with a microphone and a radio interface (for transmiting measurem=
ents).=0D
=0D
I don't need very accurate results, but as I will have to deploy a lot of m=
easurement nodes, I need each of them to be very cheap. Electret microphone=
s such as Panasonic WM-61 are enough for my purposes. My only concern with =
them is that as I need to do measurements for a year or more, I need the mi=
crophones to last as much as possible.=0D
=0D
Does anybody know (and if backed with data, better) if these microphones ca=
n last when placed outdoors without breaking or suffering severe sensitivit=
y/frequency response deviations? How can I properly (and cheaply) protect t=
hem? I can correct measurements with temperature data, and maybe also with =
humidity. Any other advices are welcome!=0D
=0D
Please avoid expensive commercial solutions (such as Class1/Class2 outdoor =
microphones).=0D
=0D
Thanks,=0D

PS: This topic is not 100% related to this group, as it deals with environm=

as for sure the experience and knowledge necessary to solve my problem, and=
the community might be interested in how to record sounds for long term wi=
th cheap microphones.=0D
