In this case the wave (though not that huge) was a point break approaching the 
cobbled shore at a fairly steep angle allowing for some direct lines of 
listening between each passing swash.  Recorded with a baffled cardioid stereo 
array.

The physical layout of the shoreline might dictate what approach is most 
appropriate. What is the shore like, and what vantage points will you have to 
choose from?
