> Sony's new handheld stereo recorder, the PCM-D100, is now available for p=
urchase in USA. The D100 offers high quality built in mics, as well as XLR =
and 3.5mm jacks for external mics. The D100 can record using PCM at data r=
ates up to 24/192, or using 2.82 MHz DSD. Street price is about $800.
The link details don't include XLR's except for adaptor leads which are not=
going to match 150 ohm pro mics into the 22K hi-Z inputs.
I find built-in mics less useful for nature recording as you can't handle
the recorder while running, so handholding is out which is a main claim for=
this recorder. As a first stage, built in mics can get you going, but for
serious work, you need an external mic rig which looks as if it will not
match to without a preamp or mixer.
It always amuses me to think that someone would seriously record wildlife a=
t
24/192 with all the storage problems involved. That's pro music studio
stuff, when you nave to impress non-tech customers who want the "best".
24/192 and toy 3.5mm jacks don't belong together. :-)
