I advise doing that by choosing mics with hot outputs that will make the input
noise of the preamps insignificant. That has nothing to do with where the
signal goes on the digital scale. I agree with Vicky on that, and use a fixed
recording level that gives lots of headroom and can accommodate almost all
natural sound situations.
