Andrew,

Silica gel is very good at absorbing water vapour, but it doesn't
absorb very much with the result that it needs drying our frequently.
you don't get much water out of it and it takes time to dry off. You
can do this in a conventional oven and also a microwave, but put a
bowl of water below it to avoid damage to the microwave when it has
dried out. Those little packets in cardboard packaging are for show
only.

I sometimes use a bit of woollen blanket which has just been ironed
dry till the steam all comes out. If moisture has got into a mic, it
may take time to dry out but the golden rule for anything wet and
electronic is not to put volts across it until it is dry. (But how
would you know?) :-)
