I believe it serves an acoustic purpose. The original designers were focuse=
d on limiting acceptance of sound waves above 1000hz from the opposite hemi=
sphere to the mic to those originating within the pickup angle. The desired=
pickup angle is defined by the faces of the foam baffle and the hard bound=
ary so I've worked on the basis that limiting sound passing through the foa=
m from the front is not desirable. The hard covering on the baffle helps re=
duce transmission from the "excluded" directions.
