I'm interested to know too. The original Crown SASS appears to have plastic
there (see http://www.crownaudio.com/sass.htm), so perhaps it was just copied.
I don't know if it has an acoustic purpose, or if it's mainly to protect the
foam.
Whatever it is, I'm very grateful to whoever had the idea to copy it.
