I use the D50, I think it's great.  The onboard mics are perfectly serviceable. 
 I sometimes plug a spaced pair of the Shire WL183's into the D50, a nice 
portable ambience rig.  I haven't tried all the different types of handheld 
recorders, but the D50 has to be in the upper tier of them, I have never felt 
it sounded noisy.
