I hope I can present a dissenting opinion. While the Sony PCM-D50 is a grea=
t piece of kit with low noise floor, it is too large to be considered a poc=
ket or hand recorder, and doesn't have the XLR inputs that would make it mo=
re useful. For me it falls between two stools, especially as it is not as q=
uiet as the Fostex FR-2LE, which you can get for about the same price. (A d=
ifferent form factor, admittedly, but handier than the D50 plus phantom pow=
er pack.)

But if you don't need phantom power and don't want a recorder you can liter=
ally carry with you everywhere, then it fits the bill in all other respects=
.
