If you need to reduce the recording level because the input signal is too high (in order to prevent clipping), one should better use a lower gain setting rather than using an extreme attenuation (let's say below about 3 or 4 out of 10) on the recording level adjustment potentiometer. This critical point would however vary between the different models. To find that critical point, one had to measure the absolute input noise voltages more or less continuously throughout all possible combinations of gain and recording level wheel positions.
