Subject: [Nature Recordists] iRig Pre anyone?
An experiment I did a year or two back with my iPod, convinced me that there
were possibilities with this device. I was staying with a friend who lives
in a reasonably quiet situation in a village, and went out for an evening
stroll. As I left the front door I heard this Blackbird singing about a
hundred yards away, and wished I had my recording gear with me. I then
realised I had my iPod in my pocket with the VC Audio Pro app on. So, I
whipped it out and started recording; for anybody interested it's here:

When I returned home I did some slight noise editing and was surprised how
good it was considering that the internal mic must have been the cheapest
rubbish of all. Today while looking for something else, I came across the
iRig Pre. Having read a couple of reviews which seemed favourable, I've
ordered one. For anybody not aware, this is 9v battery powered pre that
plugs into the headphone socket of the ipod, and can supply phantom power to
an XLR socket; has a gain control and headphone socket; see here:

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who might have used one of these.
Regards
Max
