Hello, Ian. I have been experimenting with field recordings for some years: http://hljod.blog.is For many years I used Senheiser ME-62 and -64. I used mainly the -62 omnidirectionals for spacious stereo recordings to grasp as much of the environment as possible. But in very quiet environments with low sounds the= y were a little too noisy. Therefore I was vey satisfied when I started using NT-2A and NT-1A from Rode. The only thing with the NT-1A is that they, as many condenser mics, are sensitive for moisture. Please see also http://fieldrecording.net for further information. Good luck.
