I think that Mitch is of course right about using metal conduit to protect cables in the most extreme cases, but plastic pipe--polyethylene or PVC--is pretty effective. We use it on the sea floor and over land with hydrophone cables to protect against damage from crabs and other gnawing, pinching, scratching, digging critters and it usually lasts a long time.
