The wire used is not important, but grounding the mic to the plug is.
If there is any distance between the capsule and the metal of the
plug, this should have some sort of ground shield, even just a bit of
thin grounded insulated wire wound around the exposed parts, but
outdoors you will probably get away without.
I don't know if you can get hold of it but I use epoxy putty to fix
things in place or to build up a shape. You squidge this stuff up and
mould it with your fingers and it sets hard in minutes. You can file
it or cut it if necessary when it's hard.
