Ideally, yes, within reason. Obviously at a certain point you need to get a=
t the wires to make the solder connection. Inside an XLR shell this means o=
nly about a quarter inch of cable is untwisted & unshielded, & the advantag=
e to in-line XLR connectors is that they are a a metallic shield for the co=
nductors inside. Out in the wild you are not in proximity to a lot of the s=
ources of induced hum & noise, (although radio frequencies are everywhere,)=
so obsessing over every millimeter of cable will be overkill, but it's goo=
d to get as close to ideal as possible. Exposed conductors on a barrier str=
ip works in installations for line level signals, but microphone level is v=
astly lower & thus more susceptible to picking up EMF fields.
