I find it very usable. For a long time I was favouring the Sony, since the =
noise floor is lower, as you say. But then I realised that I wasn't enjoyin=
g any of the recordings, low noise floor or no. (To be clear, this is with =
the built-in moics.)

I still have a Hi-MD unit which had excellent pres, slightly better than ei=
ther of the flash units under discussion IIRC. But these units are all in t=
he same ballpark. Thus the difference should not be noticeable unless you h=
ave a mic with just the "right" self-noise. (Noisy enough to be heard above=
the pres of one recorder but not the other.)

Only if you have mics with very low noise floor do you need a recorder with=
very low noise preamps. And if this is the ultimate priority, then you are=
better off with a shoulder-sized recorder, with phantom power and the whol=
e works. (Though a lot bulkier the Fostex FR-2LE is not heavy and a reasona=
ble price.)

That seems well within reach, but the manufacturer's won't cooperate! The f=
ull-featured hand-held units all seem to have poorer pre-amps and vice vers=
a. But I think the Olympus LS-5 comes close.
