Hi Greg
I had to google Chest and Charity Woods. I see they are near Layer-de-la-H=
ey, probably an hour away from me. I have never been there. I have visited=
Abberton a couple of times. The woods look quite extensive so might be a =
reasonably quiet place (other than the omnipresent aircraft noise that we a=
ll suffer from here). Have you recorded there?
With regard to mic noise comparison tests I have several HiMD minidisc reco=
rders as well as the Marantz 661 and the Olympus LS-10. All, more or less,=
have the same pre amp noise. It seems my two Sony NH1 minidiscs would sui=
t the requirements although an outboard phantom power supply would be requi=
red for the AT3032s.
I think the mic noise of the 3032s will be masked by the HiMD preamp noise.=
Given the noisy environment we have in this part of Essex it would be int=
eresting to see if the MX391s self noise is an issue. I see that the Shure=
Wl183 (which apparently uses the same capsule as the MX391) is generally r=
egarded as noisy for very quiet environments. Maybe the mounting of the MX=
391s on the small boundary plates will do a little better in respect of noi=
se.
