I like the looks of the Mic2496 V2, but I got the Sound Devices
USBPre2 because I wanted the USB functionality at times. The fact that
it works as a standalone preamp is icing on the cake.
Re-reading my earlier post, I realize I should make clearer: I think
the complicated setup issues and sporadic clocking alerts I have had
recording 8 tracks to the Tascam DR-680 are attributable to the
DR-680, not the SD USBPre2. The SD unit when in standalone mode has
all its parameters set by DIP switches on the bottom surface of the
device, no software required.
SD did have an early problem with their first firmware for the USBPre2
because they presumed that downstream devices would be looking at the
incoming data stream for sample rate information, but the DR-680 also
requires the appropriate flag in the subcode data be set properly in
order to recognize the digital data. SD fixed that with version 1.01.
Tascam has made major improvements of its own to the DR-680 with
firmware updates, adding track grouping, solo monitoring, and MS
decoding to the original feature set. So as I said, it's a great
machine for up to six inputs. Getting to eight is the fiddley part.
For those of us who were stuck at two tracks for years, six is a
delight!
