I would add a few notes of caution here. I have a DR-680, and for
working with up to six mikes it is great, very straightforward.
Adding on the additional two inputs through the SPDIF coaxial digital
input is more fiddley than you'd think it ought to be. I have a Sound
Devices USBPre2 which feeds the digital input. Getting the menus set
for proper clocking, monitoring, and on-site playback of all eight
tracks takes some doing.
I have also seen some very sporadic alerts during eight-channel
recordings on the DR-680 saying DIN Unlock/DIN Lock, which indicates
that something is not happy with the reception of the digital signal.
(I am running v. 1.01 firmware on the SD pre...version 1 had much
bigger problems talking to the DR-680, but SD supposedly cured that
issue with 1.01.)
