Last year I went through the same process and after several months of
evaluating 4-6-8 track recorders, I came to the conclusion only the Sound
Devices recorders fitted my needs. However as the price was out of my
reach, I went with a Marantz PMD-661 which is only a two track recorder and=
with a pair of SD 302 Mix/pre units ahead of it.
However, the point of this is your request for information and advice for a=
small, portable, lightweight, built in stereo mics, low noise
recorder. After much evaluation and testing, I settled on the Olympus
LS-11 as my pocketable field recorder. It has excellent built in mics and=
low noise mic preamps. I looked closely for a recorder that would match up=
to a pair of Sennheiser ME66 microphones which are low self noise, and am
very happy with the way the LS-11 works with these and other microphones of=
the ME series. I have also made field recordings using the built in stereo=
mics and my only comment is that with such a broad area of coverage, its
sometimes very difficult to eliminate the ambient noises that you do not
want such as vehicle traffic in the background and airplanes or kids down
the street at the school yelling at soccer matches... The built in mics
are very sensitive and give very good sound but I found I needed a bit more=
directional capture control than they provide...
All said and done, I'm very pleased with the Olympus LS-11, I think its
tops in its class...
