The 10mm capsules have about 2dB less roll off from 4khz to 6khz compared w=
ith the MKH20 w/diffuse eq. Above 8khz there the MKH20w/diffuse eq actuall=
y has better HF performance than the MiniPIP in a SASS-like rig. The MiniPI=
P's used in Vicki's tests also have a HF boost from 7khz peaking at +3dB at=
15khz compared with the stock EM172's.
The key advantage of the smaller capsules is that they don't become signifi=
cantly directional with rising frequency. Comparing mics in free air the MK=
H20 starts to become noticeably directional at 4khz while the MiniPIPs do n=
ot display a similar degree of directivity until 10khz+. It would seem tha=
t better perceived HF performance of the smaller capsules is related to the=
fact that they collecting HF information over a wider spread than the larg=
er capsules.
