 I had considered shrews as well - I've often heard them make noises simila=

to this. But in this example, the noise (both the squeaks and the rustling
leaves) seemed to indicate a larger-than-shew source. And flying squirrels
often forage on the ground, so that was the rationale behind my suggestion.

As James said - all rather speculative with out some sort of video evidence=
