I am really sorry to hear about your problems with the DR680. I also
have this machine and to this point it has worked without a hitch
(wood has been knocked). I am using a 32gb SD card, nothing super
fast, and have left the unit out overnight at least a few times in
extremely humid conditions in Alabama as well as in the Catskills. I
am using a internal AA rechargables in addition to an external 12AH
sealed lead acid battery.

As I may have mentioned in an earlier post, I do find the unit a
little on the quirky side with respect to file handling. Specifically,
if I pull the power without stopping the recording or powering down,
all files evaporate. However with batteries installed, low battery
power does begin a shutdown sequence. Still... this does not give mr
great confidence in the stability of the files.

All of this is a shame because the recordings I have gotten with it
and AT4022s are really spectacularly clear and very low noise. And 4
mics and the unit together cost less than the Sound Devices machine
alone.

If Edirol could only improve the mic pres on the R44 ...
