And here is why.
If you are 40 feet away, you need to have the gain set on your recorder at =
a reasonably high level to get the volume of sound you want from the frogs.
Unfortunately, a lot of the noise you hear is that of the equipment you use=
. With a high gain setting, you are getting a lot of recorder & microphone =
self noise. To lower the self noise, you need to turn the gain down.
A good rule of thumb is that for every halving of distance, you get a doubl=
ing of volume (I say rule of thumb because it is very slightly more than do=
uble). So, if you half the distance to 20 feet, you can turn the gain down =
on the recorder. Half it again to 10 feet, and you can turn the gain on the=
recorder down even further. And again to 5 feet, well you get the idea.
Getting closer and turning down the gain will also have the effect of cutti=
ng down on background noise of traffic etc.
So get the recorder as close as you can, hit record and walk away.
Unlike using tape of your earlier recordings, today's digital recorders let=
you record a lot of stuff and then simple edit out what you don't need. So=
if the frogs don't start calling until 10 minutes after you walk away, it =
doesn't matter. Delete all the unwanted stuff before it.
Hope that helps a bit.
