Welcome from me too, Mitch.
Your plan sounds like a good & fun one.
Pretty soon, though, you'll discover that some of the sounds you record (unless
you only record just songs of common birds) don't match the recordings
available.
Then you'll be doing really new stuff: noting what species are making the
sounds and what they're doing while making it. Hard to believe, but people
don't know this stuff and even "beginners" and "amateurs" like me can add to
our knowledge.
