I apologize for the glob of questions but I figured I would write it all ou=
t so that my aim is understood and hopefully folks could pick and chose wha=
t to answer or point me to the archives. (In my ignorance, I am unable to d=
etermine what previous information would be relevant to my questions and wh=
at would not generalize- so I apologize if this has been answered at length=
).
The main goal here is education but I would love to be able to accomplish t=
hat goal with as high quality sound as possible. I know its a lot more poss=
ible these days than even 10-15 years ago. Since the school would be footin=
g the bill, I would like to keep it as reasonable as possible- as that woul=
d increase the likelihood they would cover it. I could considering a plan t=
hat would spread the cost across 2 years- if necessary.
I have 3 setups to ask about, in order of importance.
1) Portable Budget setup for students- a generalized recording solution to =
be used by students. Price is unfortunately a primary concern as I would ha=
ve to purchase a number of these setups - but still would want something th=
at would not work against our goals due to low quality sound. the other mai=
n difficulty is the fact that the solution would have to work decently to c=
over situations ranging from urban phonography to nature recording.
I had been considering the Tascam D07 and having students build a pair of b=
inaurals off of something like WM61As. I have no experience building microp=
hones so Id have to learn.. and would be less viable if I had to build amps=
to push the mics.
- Am I on the right track with the D07 or is there a better alternative for=
under $200 (including binaural mics)?
2) A more stable setup that sacrifices portability for sound quality. I am =
leaning toward a Fostex Fr-2le with either 2x AT4042 (4041s?) or 2x Rode NT=
Message: 1As.
Subject: The purpose here would be more narrow - mainly nature recordings but n=
ot limited to wildlife.
-How would one characterize the differences between the AT4041, 4042s and R=
odes?
-Are there any other suggested setups for a comparable price?
3) I already have a Sony PCM-D50 personally which I would use as well. I wo=
uld like to broaden it into a basic dependable mobile setup to record from =
urban soundscapes to nature recordings. Two questions therefore:
- What are some affordable 'stealth' binaural mics that can be powered by t=
he PCMD50 (i.e. <$400)
- Which affordable phantom power unit (eg. Rolls or ART?) would be suggeste=
d to power external mics if I have those binaurals, and either the AT4042s =
or NT1As.
Thank you for any information you can share.
