This is a very interesting topic...

Some time ago I posted a link to some software that could ID different bird
calls (jut about any sound in fact) from a wav file. The creators reckon it is
at least as accurate as a human being, but much faster. You can read about it
here:

http://www.soundid.net/

(They're actually giving away free bird finder software at the moment; click on
the red link in the lower left side of the page.)

I posted the original message on the 20th of August after seeing the software
being demonstrated at a conference about endangered sounds. I was surprised
that no-one responded to it. Seeing it in action was quite amazing, as were the
applications it had been written for.

It could be used, for example, to identify known (or unknown) sounds from a
very long wav file, without the user needing to sift through it all manually.

It was initially designed for remote recording stations, where it would only
put the system into record when it detected what it was listening for. Very
clever stuff, saved many gigabytes of storage (as you can imagine) by
intelligently selecting when to record. It could be programmed to record only
sounds it recognised, or only sounds it did not recognise (depending on what
you were listening for).

Anyway, perhaps some of you might find it interesting...
