This is really lovely, Martyn. Murray Schafer, the father of the term,
soundscape, once did a 30 minute piece for German radio (WDR) he
called "Winter," in which he began with total silence (albeit not as
dead quiet as what you've posted). After about 5 minutes, when the ear
is totally cleansed of any sound, you hear him trudging from the
infinity of silence through the snow toward and past the microphones
back into infinity, again. Likewise, later in the piece, a distant
train invades the space and fades off into the void. That gives new
meaning to the John Cage observation that the most important sound in
music is silence.
