"Edirol R-09HR or Zoom H4n."

I have used both. I found the R-09HR built-in mics
to be quieter than the Zoom H4n.

Using the external mic inputs, the H4n's XLR inputs
are surprisingly noisy. The noise is reduced if
you don't use the phantom power. The R-09HR's 1/8-inch
input is pretty quiet. Slightly better (in my
opinion) is the 1/8-inch input on the back of the H4n.

The Zoom H4 is the older model. It suffers from extra
noise added by the internal power supply and the circuit
that writes data to the flash memory card.
