Raymond--
The MKH-20 is available and is a very popular omni with 10 dB(A)
self-noise and 25 mV/Pa sensitivity. You can sort this .xls
spreadsheet by noise to see if other mics standout.

or view it:

The Schoeps MK2, for example, is smaller and comparable. DPA makes some gem=
s.
The SASS array does seem to fit the "quasi binaural" category well.
Jecklin and Curt's rigs do as well and they're a heck of a lot easier
to make or buy than modified SASS. If you are looking for something
you can buy that has a great reputation for good spatialization, the
used Neumann KU-81i might still be for sale on eBay. Its a little
noisier but not objectionable if you're aiming for nocturnal
applications. Rob D.
