Hi Raymond and welcome to the list!

We're you thinking of recording in quiet, natural spaces with a
stand-mounted stereo mic? I'm guessing this based on your enquiry
about the SASS, but this might not be the case. As you may be aware
already, a number of recordists use rigs that Walter Knapp made that
use the Crown manufactured SASS housing, but equipped with low-noise
(Sennhesier MKH-20) mics. Two, popular, spaced-pair array
alternatives for SASS are Jecklin http://tinyurl.com/n68awk and Curt
Olson's Head-Spaced Boundary Arrays
http://www.trackseventeen.com/mic_rigs.html. All of the arrays
produce different results and that's part of the joy of exploring the
art of field recording.

You'll see quite a few references to Audio Technica AT-3032 mics in
the list archive. These mics were often recommended as a very low
noise omni mic bargain before they were discontinued. I think we're
still waiting for a report on the the AT4022 which is the designated,
higher-cost replacement.

Your SD 702 will complement a wide range of mics and there are many
other very suitable mics that we don't discuss often. If you want to
share some more information about the subjects you hope to record,
the recording style you prefer (for example, stand-mounted,
hand-held, body- mounted) and the budget you have in mind, that will
help us in our suggestions. Rob D.
