Hi Oryoki-
Thanks for announcing and summarizing Scott's reports. His
AT-3032's/Art Phantom II combo does indeed provide a very useful
reference for many on this list.
Scott's internal mic pre comparisons seem to be fairly consistent
with Raimund's input Equivalent Input Noise (EIN) measurements for
the stereo recorders:
http://www.avisoft.com/recordertests.htm
Edirol R-09 (MIC Gain HIGH) -105dBu (A-weighted)
Edirol R-09HR (MIC Gain H) -118dBu (A-weighted)
(Larger negative numbers = lower noise)
For demanding situations like recording ambience in quiet locations,
its ideal if the recorder's input noise is inaudible "behind" the
self-noise produced by the mics. This might mean input noise
performance around -126dBu (A-weighted) for the AT-3032 mic with
~8dB(A) self-noise. Although Scott's test shows that the R-09HR's
pre noise performance is a significant improvement over the R-09's,
its not as "exceptional" as some nature recordists might have been
hoping for. Rob D.
