The description suggests to me that the noise is when the MD recorder
cranks up to dump its memory buffer onto the disc. MD recorders, at
least my pre-Hi-MD machines, don't record to the disc continuously.
The disc spins down between buffer dumps.

I've experienced the sounds of the disc spinning up being picked up by
my mics acoustically.

Also I recall troubleshooting a machine where a buzz when spinning was
created when the mic cable plug was touching the recorder case. When a
bit electrical tape was put next to the mic jack to prevent the sleeve
from contacting the case, the buzz went away. The owner called it his
$150 bit of tape...
