I just checked the Sony user manual on line=A0for the PCM D50 and it implie=
s that as you rotate the microphones from 90 to 120 they swap over so the m=
ic on the left goes to the right when set at 90 then becomes the left as it=
is moved to the 120 position.
On another point, looking at the Sony spec it would appear to have a pretty=
good line-input as well if what they quote is to be believed "93dB or grea=
ter" at 24 bit.

The "standard" mic orientation on the SONY PCM-D50 is obviously the
90=B0 settings (XY setup), in which the (physically) left mic points to
the right hand side. This setup leads to the correct left/right
channel assignment in the .wav files.
Things will of course change if one used the 120=B0 setting, in which
the left mic points to the left hand side.
