Thank you all for your responses!  This is a great help and,
considering all the feedback while weighing in my own preferences and
recording style, I believe I will go with my initial inspiration with
the DSM's from Leonard at Sonic Studios.  Ultimately my decision is
based on ease of set-up (or, no set-up!) and Aaron's solid experience
stating this is quite a reliable mic at various levels.

I've been recording into my PCM-d50 with my cheap binaruals and, while
the deck is incredible, I can't wait to hear the difference good mics
will make!  My urban sound tests actually haven't been that bad.  I'm
heading to Moab soon.  My fear is, I'll probably record more "noise"
than ambience!
