Curt,
I'm not sure how much I would attribute to the Grace preamp. Though I
would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the Grace and the
Sound Devices preamps with similar mics. I feel there is a
significant difference between the Schoeps and Sennheiser tracks, but
this is no surprise. I look forward to comparing them with the
regular line of MKH soon.
That said I would like to withhold my opinion about the sound of the
MKH 8040 until a few more people have commented on it. The Schoeps vs
Sennheiser is interesting to me from the perspective of the Schoeps
are what I have been recording with, so I am probably a bit biased
towards their sound. (I'm also looking for a more humidity resistant
field mic!)
In the field I matched levels by ear and there could be slight level
differences in the two tracks.
