Unfortunately I don't know of any 'cheap' and 'good' MS single point mics. There aren't even a ton of them to choose from. As you noted, the VP88 is noisy. The good ones I can think of: the Sanken CSM-7 and CSM-9, the Neumann 191, these are several thousand dollars. I know you said you want to stay away from two mics, but this is really you best option. You'll be able to find better mics for the money. You can also mount both mics in a Rycote type housing, and then construct a single 5 pin cable, which will give you a convenience of a single point mic. This is how all my MS rigs are setup. I think you'll find most any cheap single point MS mic is going to be too noisy for nature sound recording.
