Controlling a Sound Devices recorder automatically

Hi all,

Hoping someone either knows of a lower cost alternative to the Sound
Devices CL1, which costs around US$325-375 or has some control
documentation on Sound Devices' communications protocol.

I am aware that the SD7### series can be controlled via the CL1 serial
interface either by a PS2 keyboard or by using (5) dedicated switches
on the input pins to the CL1 and programming the SD7### for whatever
keyboard shortcuts or for which hard wired connections on the CL1 do what.
But there doesn't appear (from my reading and playing), any way of
actually programming the units on their own, like some other recorders.

Is there any known documentation on the signals and protocol the
SD7### uses for its communication ?

I would like to use some small dedicated microprocessor units (AVR
Atmels) that I have made to control the SD7### units so I can remotely
control them in the field to record at multiple preprogrammed times
and intervals (that would otherwise be impossible and/or inconvenient).

I might with some difficulty derive the protocol but this would be
hard and time consuming for me and in any event necessitate the extra
expense of a CL1 which I am trying to avoid.

Heres hoping !

Thanks Rally
