I think it has to do with being small, with small contact area and low contact pressure. Hard to break through contamination and oxide, hard to achieve a "gas tight" connection. A drop of Caig DeoxIT [sic] works wonders. And yet the 3.5mm stereo jack has become common on professional equipment now. E.g. headphone jacks on Sound Devices recorders, headphone jacks on professional camcorders. A professional-grade male plug is now available from Switchcraft in straight and 90 degree versions. No pro cable-end female jack yet. -Dan Dugan |
