[gear] Tascam DR-1

I received a sample Tascam DR-1 on Friday. I can't recommend it.

The 3.5mm mic input and headphone output have poor electrical
connections. If the mic cable or input jack is touched, static-like
noise is added to the recording. The headphone jack had a similar
noise problem when wiggled a bit. This is not a good sign after only
30 minutes' use!

It's possible that I received a poorly constructed unit. If you're
considering the DR-1, be sure to test the 3.5mm jacks.

I also found the ergonomics of the DR-1 to be poor. For example, it's
easy to accidentally activate the "fx" button, which makes your
recordings echo like you're standing in a tunnel.

I expected better from Tascam. Their HD-P2 is a very good full-size
field recorder. Too much quality was lost in the DR-1's low cost design.

For an example of great design, ergonomics and build quality, consider
the Olympus LS-10.
