Hi Kyle
These sort of problems are the most annoying!
You need to replace the lead between the mic & the recorder to check if it =
is damaged screening within the cable. It may look good at the connectors b=
ut could be damaged within its length.
If the problem persists when using an alternate lead the fault lies either =
in the mic or the recorder.
Also try wearing disposable surgical gloves in case its a static charge in =
you.
A further experiment for poor screening could be done with a six foot lengt=
h of insulated solid copper wire stripped out from a domestic 2.5mm mains e=
lectricity installation cable. Shove at least 6 inches of the bare copper w=
ire into the ground whilst keeping it in place with your foot and touch the=
other end against a metal part of the connectors whilst monitoring the cra=
ckle and see if goes away. Do not touch any metal parts of your rig during =
this test. If the noise disappears then it is definitely a shielding/earthi=
ng problem and a process of elimination by swapping mics, cables & recorder=
s whilst monitoring the effect will lead to whichever piece of kit has the =
problem.
Best of luck.
