Thanks everyone for your help. I'm beginning to understand. The iRiver has a line in (and optical in) rather than a mic socket so it seems to be the case that I will need to pre-amp any mic I use. SO... my next question is can you get any directional mics which have a built in pre-amp, or can you get a portable, small, battery-powered preamp in the UK? Thanks again for the advice so far...
