It seems I'm actually pedaling an urban myth here. silver oxide is in  
fact a far worse conductor than silver.

The act of plugging the connector should be enough to ensure a clean  
contacts, but it might be worth using a contact cleaner/preserver  
like Caig on silver contacts if it seems like it will be an issue.
