For AA and similar, there are numerous solar powered battery
rechargers available that could be a viable option. With three
duplicate sets of batteries and one of those solar powered rechargers,
you could be recording for a very long time, and you won't be going in
with a ton of live batteries and coming out with a ton of dead
batteries.

It's also a better option in the event that somehow you prematurely
flatten the batteries - like, unintentionally leaving the machine on
overnight, or getting so excited about a certain sound that you play
it back to yourself over and over again. With three sets of
rechargable batteries and a solar powered recharger, such things are
not problems.

If you can't recharge your batteries on location, then you've built a
time limit into your recording capabilities before you even leave
home. But, of course, this must be weighed up against how much
recording capability (compact flash?) you're taking. There's not much
point in having 100 hours or more of power if you only have 50 hours
of recording capability.

Some solar recharging possibilities can be found here:

With a bit of planning and foresight, you could work out how many sets
of batteries you're going to need, and what sort of recharging regime
you'll need to adopt. You'd probably want to make sure that at least
one set of batteries is sitting in the unit being charged at any point
in time. That's easy to do if you're making camp for a few hours each
day.

If you plan to be constantly on the move, maybe consider a two-piece
unit like this:

The panel itself can be laid flat on the ground when you're at camp,
or hung over your backpack when on the move.

Then there are products like the Juice Bags and similar:

I hope some of that is helpful...
