About Bay Area Sound Ecology

BASE is a new chapter of the the American Society for Acoustic
Ecology, forming now. It is envisioned as a forum for everyone
interested in discussing and sharing an appreciation for sound and the
soundscape: as an interdisciplinary group centered around listening
and sound-environment awareness.

We foresee BASE appealing to and welcoming listeners and sound workers
of all stripes: field recordists, nature sound enthusiasts, sound
designers, location sound recordists, acoustician, sound artists,
ecologists, natural quiet advocates, radio producers, musicians...
anyone else interested in soundscape and our interactions with it.

* Your membership is encouraged!

For more information on membership, how to help shape BASE, and on
future events and other topics of interest, please join the BASE
listserv at:

 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bayareasoundecology/

In the coming month or so, we'll also have a website... stay tuned.

About BASEbot

Named with a gracious nod to the popular Dorkbot model (c.f.
dorkbot.org), BASEbot will meet as a regular forum for BASE, and as a
listening salon for BASE members and the interested public.

Each meeting will feature a main speaker or two addressing relevant
topics; an opportunity to converse casually over snacks and
beverages; an open floor for announcements, calls for participation,
and the like; and a listening salon -- an opportunity for attendees to
share recordings, compositions, and other sound work, with a critical,
supportive, and like-minded audience. Meetings are expected to last
about two hours, with no expectation that attendees stay for the
entire event.

* BASE welcomes proposals for future BASEbots and other events of
interest to our emerging membership!

* Donations to offset event costs will be much appreciated but are
certainly not required!

About the speaker for November 28, Chris Watson

Chris Watson is one of the best-known field recordists in the world.
His work is an evolving interplay between field recording of the very
highest technical caliber, and sound art composition (with those
recordings) of the most nuanced and subtle nature. It is our great
pleasure and honor to announce that he will be the featured speaker at
this inaugural meeting of BASEbot.

 http://chriswatson.net/

"Working with sound since 1972, Chris Watson currently specializes in
location and field recordings, mostly for natural history
documentaries. Many of these documentaries have been broadcast on BBC
television and radio. Other nature recordings have found their way
onto his solo CDs, many of which have received international acclaim.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s he was a member of the early English
industrial music group Cabaret Voltaire. After departing CV, he
co-founded The Hafler Trio, an experimental music project. In 1987 he
formally began his present work as a sound recordist."

Other topics for November 28

The evening will include a very brief introduction to the preliminary
goals for BASE and BASEbot by organizers Jeremiah Moore and Aaron
Ximm, and will include both a "meet and greet" and open floor and

listening salon sections.

* Attendees are invited to bring select recordings (or projects) to
share as time allows; CDs or self-contained players are probably best.

Special note

BASE is able to invite Chris Watson to speak only because he is in
town to discuss his work at the San Francisco Art Institute and to do
two concerts with Florian Hecker at Recombinant Media Laboratories (in
partnership with 23five, Inc.) on Friday, November 30th.

We are grateful that these organizations have made Chris' visit
possible and smiled on our invitation to have Chris address a more
technical audience at the first BASE meeting!

the Bay Area, please see:

(Personal note: if you haven't been to RML, it features a
custom-designed deeply multichannel sound surround sound system with
10-screen surround video... the most amazing media environment I've
experienced! - Aaron)
